At Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours, they reunite with the beloved cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches-with one significant exception. In The Book of Life,ĭiana and Matthew time-travel back from Elizabethan London to make a dramatic return to the present-facing new crises and old enemies. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew’s past tightens around them, and they embark on a very different-and vastly more dangerous-journey.īringing the magic and suspense of the All Souls Trilogy to a deeply satisfying conclusion, this highly anticipated finale went straight to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the School of Night. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Vampire yoga anyone? The good outweighed the bad however and I’m glad I stuck with it, and at 608 pages, this isn’t a quick read but I’m interested to see where the story goes and look forward to the next instalment.Īs a final note, the book is bound to draw similarities to the Twilight saga, it’s a given, and for that reason, I’m sure anyone that loves Edward and Bella will adore this too.Ĩ/10 There were moments reading this book that I thought it was brilliant.Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. The description of the Bodleian library and it’s old manuscripts were extremely detailed, but then in other parts of the book I found simply hilarious. There were moments reading this book that I thought it was brilliant. Diana’s life is turned upside down the day she comes into contact with an ancient manuscript which holds the secrets to the very existence of supernatural creatures. Here she meets and falls in love with Matthew, 1,500 year old Vampire and sworn enemy. We follow Diana, American scholar and reluctant Witch, studying all things alchemical at Oxford. I’d heard about it, heck, even managed to bag myself a promotional t-shirt emblazoned with the words ’Witch, Daemon, Vampire, Human?’ just as it was about to be released, so of course, I was itching to get started with this book. A Discovery Of Witches is the first book in a trilogy by Deborah Harkness. ![]()
